WordPress.tv

It’s been nine years since WordPress.tv was launched. We originally posted about it back in January of 2009. At the time we didn’t know just how much content was going to make its way onto the website. Now WordPress.tv is an invaluable resource for WordPress users of all interests and experience levels.

The reach of the website has expanded in that time as well. Now you can follow WordPress.tv on Twitter to see the latest videos as they’re posted. Or you can tune in to the site’s YouTube channel. The team has been great about looking for ways to make the video assets more useful and available to as many viewers as possible.

WordCamp Videos

One of the major initiatives on the website is hosting videos shot around the world at WordCamps. The dedicated section of the site has expanded as the number of WordCamps has swelled. You can browse by year or language. The site lists recent WordCamps on the page and highlights a few of their sessions.

The number of sessions available is truly amazing. We’ve made use of this even for WordCamps that we attended. It’s great to be able to go back and catch a session that you missed because of a time conflict. If you weren’t able to attend a WordCamp outside of your area you can still see many of the sessions on WordPress.tv.

How-To Videos

In addition to WordCamp videos there is an entire section of the website dedicated to How-To videos. Here too you’ll see videos from around the world covering an impressive array of topics. You can submit your own videos to appear on WordPress.tv regardless of whether you’re at a WordCamp or not. As long as you follow the submission guidelines your video can be considered.

Continuous improvements are always being made to the site all the time. You can get involved with the WordPress.tv team and help make these changes happen faster. If you have skills with video editing or speak multiple languages there is a backlog of videos that could use captioning and/or translations. Joining the WordPress.tv team is a great way to support the WordPress community.

Translation & Localization in WordPress

Last night I gave a talk about preparing your code for the global community by making it translation ready at the WordPress Orange County developer meetup. I also showed two tools to create translations, Poedit and GlotPress. Someone also mentioned an online tool called POEditor which is free to use up to a certain number of strings.
