WordPress on Your iPhone

WordPress on Your iPhone

We first wrote about using WordPress on your iPhone back in November of 2008. At the time the iPhone was a little over a year old, WordPress was on version 2.6, and the iPhone operating system was on version 2.1. A lot has changed since then and we thought it was high time that we took a look at the state of the iPhone app for WordPress.

Back to the Future

The latest version of the WordPress app is currently 7.3 and was last updated just a few days ago on April 11, 2017. The app has come a long way since its first version. You’re still able to blog directly from your phone, including photos taken from you camera roll. But the interface is so much more intuitive and clean. In addition to being able to blog, the current release has some great additional features. You can see statistics for you visitors, views, comments, and much more if your site is connected to a WordPress.com account via Jetpack. You can also receive push notifications from your site so you’re always connected. In addition, you can use the app to keep up with reading your favorite WordPress blogs.

Not Just for iPhones Anymore

The application has been so successful on the iPhone that a version for Android phone users has been created as well. While they’ve strived for parity between the two versions, it’s great to see that the two operating systems have been considered in the design of the apps. In addition, there is a desktop version of the app that gives you quick access to the same tools from the comfort of your own desktop. You can connect to multiple accounts and manage them all very quickly. Your self-hosted site does need to be connected to Jetpack in order to make use of the tool.

Well Supported

There is a website for the app where you can read a little more about the project or get involved with development if you’re so inclined. In addition, there are forms for both iPhone and Android users where you can post and get assistance on any issues that you may have with the respective apps.

Looking Ahead

It’s remarkable to see how much has changed in the nine years since the first version of the app was released. WordPress itself has matured into a robust CMS platform that can be leveraged for enterprise-level work. However, it has been able to hang on to the core functionality of being able to create posts, add images, and share your writing with the world. If you have a site and an iPhone you should definitely download the app and share your travels.
